Alternative Medicine...Is It Right For You?

I chose alternative medicine over 20 years ago as my main healing path to follow when I have health issues, although, I will and do use my conventional physician (who also practices integrative medicine, which incorporates both traditional and alternative therapies) when I think that would be best for me. This is something you have to think about and decide for yourself.

My goal is to stay as healthy in body and mind for as long as I can and for me, relying on drugs to ‘cure’ something, is not where I want to go. I want to get to the ‘root’ of the problem and decide from there, which healing modality (homeopathic, energy medicine, Reiki, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and many others) is best for the particular health issue involved.

I will also be writing about the aforementioned (and many others) healing modalities as there is a lot more to alternative medicine than just supplements and herbs. It also involves your lifestyle as well.

Spirituality is also a big part of my healing path, and I wouldn’t be ‘me’ if I did not mention and also write about these different healing modalities. I will give you the information and the different methods that I personally have used. It doesn’t matter if you’re a ‘believer’ or not. Other methods do work to heal, its just finding something that fits you and your lifestyle. That is the key.

If I have a health issue, I first research it, read about it, and try out some possible remedies. Now, if I thought it was something serious, I would never hesitate to use my conventional doctor so I would know what I’m dealing with. I even research and take my findings to my doctor and if they are not comfortable with the method I want to use, then I seek and find the right medical professional for me for that particular issue.

Unfortunately, not all alternative medicine therapies are covered under health care insurance, so it can get expensive. This is another completely different topic, and I may write about it in the future.

Complementary (I prefer the term, Integrative, and other similar terms such as holistic medicine, natural healing, and naturopathic medicine) and alternative medicine is defined as a group of many various medical and health care products such as vitamins, herbs, and practices that currently are not recognized as being a part of traditional medicine.

These two types of therapies, complementary and alternative, are dependent upon the body’s natural ability to heal itself. They do not rely on prescription medicine, surgery, and other traditional medical practices. Also, the advantages of conventional practices/procedures are recognized when essential.

The root cause of the health issue is always approached first and then the entire person is looked at (this includes your mind, emotions, body, and spirit). Signs of illness are not just covered up as can be the case with conventional medicine.

Getting you to the highest state of health is what complementary and alternative therapies try to achieve. They concentrate on preventing an illness and helping you feel the best you can while being treated.
